Issues with dimensioning tools and settings

When I now attempt to apply a dimension to whatever item, if the mouse is hovering over a surface it doesn't apply the dimension put highlights/selects the surface instead when I click the mouse.
The pull down menu symbols require extra scrolling to navigate. Only 4 show at one time.
In the dimension text dialogue, when I click "replace with text" I get a message that says to select the element to change the dimension.
Now I can’t seem to find anyway of directly changing a new dimension’s font, style (eg bold) or height.
