Lack of native real-time billing and quota enforcement in Stripe

Merchants struggle with Stripe's 'meter now, invoice later' architecture, which fails to prevent usage overages in real-time. This creates significant gaps in quota gating, plan versioning, and trial logic, forcing users to build custom billing engines on top of the payment processor.

Stripe records usage. It doesn't prevent usage.

the native sync won't run or create subscriptions on Stripe's side, and it doesn't cover everything cleanly, metered/usage-based being the usual gap.

Stripe records usage, it doesn't prevent it. Stripe's credit grants apply at invoice finalization, not at event time, so there's no native "does this customer have balance to run this request?" check before the work happens.

Most teams use Stripe for payments and build the billing engine themselves.
