Limitations in split shipping and checkout for mixed-item orders
Merchants struggle to manage orders containing a mix of in-stock, pre-order, or multi-location items. Current Shopify logic fails to provide flexible shipping options, separate tax/payment terms for different fulfillment timelines, or clear visibility of split shipping costs at checkout.

Shopify can’t do all of that in one checkout. Split Shipping in Checkout will let the customer pick and pay shipping separately for the in-stock vs pre-arrival group, but underneath it’s still one order and one payment capture, and you can’t set proper separate tax or payment terms per group at checkout.
I want people to have the option to either pay to ship available items now, and pay to ship pre-orders later, or wait to ship all items together.
I’ve also struggled with the Shopify shipping logic. The logic we would like is: Minimize split shipments
