The pain

We're seeing our illustration and design work for book publishers get replaced by AI-generated covers. Clients who used to pay us poorly are now turning to AI, and indie authors are being tricked by scammers posing as human artists. The market is being flooded with AI slop that undercuts our rates and devalues our craft.

I've done illustration work for waaaay too little money (like, $50/pg for full color kids books) for a small publisher who I'm guessing is using AI now since they could never afford decent pay for their artists.

All my publishing clients have made it known that they don't allow any AI on their covers. I do see a lot AI from self published authors.

It’s sad how many indie authors are taken in by shitty people who claim to be “ai-free artists” and then hand over completely AI generated covers to people who don’t know any better.
