The story

The pain

We pour time into building clean, accurate dashboards, but the people they're built for rarely open them. Instead, they ask for static summaries in meetings, or they look at the same numbers and walk away with conflicting interpretations because no one owns the cross-functional view. The dashboard answers 'how are the numbers' but not 'what should I do next,' so it becomes decoration rather than a decision tool.

The dashboard answered "how are the numbers." It didn't answer "what should I do next." Those are different questions and I only built for the first one.

built it, it's good, it's live, it's accurate, it updates itself, and the four people it was built for have collectively opened it eleven times since Feb. What they do instead is ask me, in a meeting, what the number say. so now I have a second job, which is turning a live dashboard into a Static summary once a month, and the static summary is a huge decision aid. The dashboard is decoration.

I’m starting to care less about making reporting prettier and more about whether somebody can look across all of it and decide what needs to change more dashboards haven’t really fixed that for me. If anything they sometimes make it easier to avoid the messy part where someone has to connect the numbers back to what the business is trying to do

had this exact thing and the fix wasnt a better dashboard, it was that nobody owned the across view. paid, sales and finance each had someone accountable for their own slice and no one was accountable for the version that spans them once that role existed the dashboards stopped being where the argument happened, they were just where it got checked. is there anyone there whose actual job is the whole picture
