The story
The pain
We're constantly fighting fraudulent orders that slip through Shopify's fraud analysis. Even with country blocks and custom rules, scammers use VPNs and mismatched addresses to place orders that Shopify flags as only 'medium risk' despite obvious red flags. We're stuck eating chargeback fees and refunding the transaction costs, and Shopify's claims process often rules against us even when we have written confirmation from the buyer that the order was legitimate.

I've already blocked the country as a whole, but they use VPNs and still get around it. Right now I have to deal with 2 chargebacks and hope I win those.
Shopify is like "Medium risk here" ...... Not High, but just Medium .... About this order Billing street address doesn't match credit card's registered address Billing address ZIP or postal code doesn't match credit card's registered address Shipping address is 5464 miles from location of IP address The billing address is listed as United States, but the order was placed from Cyprus A high risk internet connection (web proxy) was used to place the order
I reached out to the customer to provide more info - They sent me an image of their debit card, with the first 12 numbers blocked out. I asked for a phone number to verify; they responded that they just moved to the US from another country and don't currently have a phone number. I really don't want to get stuck with a chargeback situation - it feels like there are some big red flags here.
I got hit by professional fraudsters and lost the shopify claims process. A purchase was made by members of the same household. One member sent items to another member. The billing name was the registered address at both billing and the shipping address. I got a medium fraud alert, so I contacted them via email and phone to confirm the purchase was not fraudulent. I received a response in writing and via text and email that the order was legitimate. Once they received the package the filed a chargeback. My gripe is that SHOPIFY doesn't require the billing phone number to match when making a purchase. I think this is the reason I lost the case.
Scammers keep slipping through my rules and I get stuck with refunding the amount plus the Shopify $.39 fee. Granted that’s not a lot but after over twenty, it adds up and the frustration level reaches boiling point.
