The story

The pain

We're trying to use data catalogs for governance and discovery, but they fall short. Unity Catalog is just a tech dictionary with no real governance layer, and tools like Alation are so expensive and complex that we're replacing them with simpler solutions like SharePoint. Even when we have a catalog, nobody uses it because metadata is bad and lacks context, making it easier to just ask someone than to find what we need in the catalog.

Unity catalog is only a tech dictionary, its not a data catalog and the semantic /ontology roadmap is only for tech guys. If you need a dictionary ok, if you need a governance layer datahub, openmetadata or actian/atlan.

Nobody ever uses the catalog because it’s easier to ask than confidently find something in the catalog because metadata is usually bad and even if it’s thoughtful it likely does not have the context the next user needs.

I tried out the open source version, and there is not feature parity at all, or else the documentation is hiding it real well. Just configuring Unity to manage tables made me regret it.
