The pain
We're finding that our employers list 'Employer Paid FICA' as part of our gross earnings, then calculate our income taxes and our own FICA based on that inflated total. This means we're paying Social Security and Medicare taxes on money that was never actually paid to us, and our FICA contributions end up higher than our employer's. It makes our paychecks impossible to reconcile and leaves us feeling cheated out of our hard-earned money.

My stub every week has my “Pay” section that has a line item for my gross earnings and a line for “Employer Paid FICA.” (I do have a separate benefits section on each stub as others have mentioned to verify) My employer adds those two line items to get a number they are calling my “Total Pay” and then calculating my taxes based off of that. Because of this I am paying more FICA than my employer. They calculating their portion of FICA based off of my gross earnings. They calculating my portion of FICA based off of my gross earnings AND their portion of FICA.
My fica and their fica do not match. Under the “pay” section I have my gross wages and “Employer Paid FICA” that they add together to get what they are calling my “Total Pay.” They then take that number to calculate my taxes. This is causing me to pay more in FICA than they are because they are calculating their portion of FICA based on my gross wages (correctly) but they are calculating my portion of FICA based on my gross wages PLUS their FICA portion (the “Total Pay” referenced above)
