The story
The pain
We run our businesses across Square for in-person sales and Shopify for online orders, but the two systems don't talk to each other. The sync is unreliable—it spins forever, resets stock, and creates a gap where both channels think they have the full count, leading to overselling. We end up manually updating inventory or deactivating listings before every show just to avoid embarrassing moments with customers.

The spinning and resetting is not a bug you can fix, it is what the connection actually is. Etsy and Square do not talk to each other. Whatever is bridging them is a third party app polling both platforms on an interval, usually somewhere between 15 minutes and an hour, and pushing whatever it read the last time it checked. During that gap both channels think they have the full count, which is exactly how you oversell, and "spinning forever" is usually that poll failing silently and retrying.
I sell on Etsy and also do in-person markets with Square, and their sync has been a nightmare — stock resetting, sync just spinning forever, having to manually deactivate/reactivate listings before every show so I don’t oversell.
I run a small business and use Square for my in person sales and Shopify for my online store. They don't talk to each other, so I'm the one manually updating inventory between them almost every day. I sell something in store, I go update Shopify. I get an online order, I go update my in person count. I've already had a couple embarrassing moments where I told a customer we had something and we didn't.
